In a time when video game news is dominated by negativity and disappointment, 343 announcing the Master Chief Collection is coming to PC is a welcome change of pace. With Halo Reach coming to Xbox and the entire collection slowly rolling out to PC, it feels like the studio is listening to their customers and making decisions accordingly. It’s no secret fans of Halo and PC gamers at large have been clamoring for another port, with Halo 2 being the last to release on PC back in 2007. Their wait will soon come to an end.
The schedule for release is a bit unique unlike its Xbox counterpart, the game won’t drop all at once. Instead, Halo Reach will be the first of the franchise to return and then the remastered games Halo Combat Evolved through Halo 4 will be released in updates. Let’s hope this slower release schedule will allow 343 to avoid the disaster that was the 2014 launch on console. The Xbox One launch was famously plagued with network issues essentially making the multiplayer aspect of the game unplayable.
The buzz this announcement has generated was sorely needed for Microsoft and 343. With 343 still being eyed skeptically after filling the large hole left by Bungie, the series original creators. While Halo 5 did well critically and financially, the series has lost a considerable amount of mindshare in recent years. Viewers aren’t tuning into the game in large numbers on YouTube or Twitch, but with this announcement a new audience of primarily PC players can be reached.
The release continues to show Microsoft’s commitment to bringing their flagship franchises to PC. A notion which stands in sharp contrast to their competitors Sony and Nintendo’s strategy of keeping their exclusives, well exclusive. It’s a bold maneuver, that many people have a take on, but truly we don’t know how it will turn out. The only thing I do know for sure is, now that the Master Chief Collection is on PC, Microsoft has my attention.
