The name Frozen Dolphin is an illusion to my geographic location relative to the sunshine state. A man rooting for a team a thousand miles away while miserably cold for most of the season. However it’s also a commentary on the state of the Miami Dolphins over the past decade plus. The team has felt stuck in the throes of mediocrity never good enough to truly compete for championships or short of that, respect from outside observers. Though in turn never bad enough to warrant the team being blown up, burned to ashes in the hopes they would rise from them as something better and more complete.
Since their last division title in 2008 the team has subsisted on a steady diet of middling results. Ranging from 6-10 to 10-6 causing them to be inert. Not quite a laughing stock but equally far away from contenting. They are frozen, and that makes the torching of the team over the past few weeks necessary if they ever hope to be more than average.
The subtraction of high profile players such as Cameron Wake, Ryan Tannehill and most recently Laremy Tunsil provided the kindling for the potential dumpster fire that 2019 Miami Dolphins could become. The Ravens lead by Lamar Jackson a quarterback whose passing ability many questioned heading into his sophomore season provided the match. Or perhaps more accurately the flamethrower. Destroying any lingering hope even the most diehard fans might have secretly harbored.
The Dolphins are a bad football team, end of sentence. With Tom Brady the ageless wonder, who at this point it seems most probable that he traded eternal damnation for gridiron immortality leading the ever dominate New England Patriots down to Miami we are going to find out just how bad they truly are. True this is the same field that hosted the Miami Miracle only nine months ago, but that might as well have been a lifetime. There is no magic to be found here, only further misery and the promise that this time it will pay off. That as Dolphin fans we only need to trust the process. Trust the process and hope our livers can fight off cirrhosis caused by the sheer volume of booze it will take to make it to January, while we wait for our team to finally thaw out.
