Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Spoiler Free Review

At long last after nine mainline films, the Skywalker saga has come to an end with The Rise of Skywalker. The series is perhaps one of the most recognizable and important media franchises of all time. Touching the lives of countless millions since it’s premier in May of 1977. So concluding the story in a way that satisfied everyone would be nigh impossible. The question is were J.J. Abrams and Disney able to pull it off? The answer is complicated. 

The Rise of Skywalker much like its predecessor The Last Jedi provides some of the most imaginative and compelling moments the franchise has ever produced. These flashes of excellence are juxtaposed against truly baffling decisions that are more likely to make you groan than cheer. 

It feels as if Disney made a gross miscalculation when allowing filmmakers the autonomy to shape their various franchise entries independently of one another. While Abrams and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson are two of the most talented filmmakers currently working, the lack of an overarching narrative created a severely disjointed trilogy. This lack of cohesion leaves you with the feeling that what you’re watching could have been better if things were planned out thoroughly before filming began on the first entry The Force Awakens.

However the world where everything was meticulously planned out is not the one we live in, and we have to take The Rise of Skywalker for what it is. As such I feel there is enough here for long time fans to get a lot out of the film and leave the theater satisfied. Conversely there is plenty wrong with this finale, and an equal number of audience members will go home feeling disappointed. With that said I’m giving Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker a 5/10.
