The PlayStation 5 is Coming So Here are Some Thoughts

First and foremost it should be established that this blog is little more than exhausted ramblings based on first impressions. It is not a well thought out evaluation on the Playstation 5 and what it means for gaming. We know you don't come here for that, in fact according to our numbers you hardly come here at all, so thank you for stopping by and enjoy our thoughts on the Playstion 5 reveal.

The next generation of gaming is fast approaching, and while E3 is canceled due to the Coronavirus, that didn’t stop Sony which has finally given us a glimpse into what they have to offer. While a price point wasn’t established which is admittedly disappointing the games were anything but. Sony showed off new titles such as Ghostwire Tokoyo and Deathloop while providing plenty of sequels including Horizon Zero Dawn II Forbidden West and Spider-man: Miles Morales to keep the long time fans invested. Third party titles were well represented with NBA 2K21, Hitman III and Resident Evil VIII: Village each providing plenty of hype. Most of the more than an hour long stream was dedicated to games, a smart move as when they revealed what the Playstation 5 looks like things would in my opinion turn disappointing.

Undoubtedly there will be many people defending the… unique design choices that went into creating the PS5. I will not be one of them, it feels like this generation Microsoft and Sony gave up on making their consoles aesthetically pleasing. While the new generation of Xbox has already been memed on for looking more like a refrigerator than the next great thing in gaming, the PS5 looks like a Gundam tried to invade Endor and got the AT-ST treatment. The best or worst part depending on where you stand is the disc tray that looks like it was added hastily and breaks the symmetry the rest of the console was seemingly working to establish.

Gaming consoles aren’t just games and looks, just mostly those two things. I’m no expert on the technical aspects of consoles however I can say that the addition of a Solid State Drive should make a world of difference when it comes to load times. The controllers have seen a redesign which includes haptic feedback and active triggers. Two things that will surely work towards making the gaming experience more immersive.

To conclude this was a strong showing from Sony, who will look to sustain the success they have seen this generation. The aversion both Sony and Microsoft have shown to establishing a price has been exceedingly frustrating. Both companies seem to be locked in this game of chicken, waiting for the other to make the first move so that they can work on either undercutting their competition or sell the public on why their console is worth the extra cash.
