Every time a new piece of tech drops there’s always a lot of excitement but oftentimes that excitement is undercut by the distant lack of respect by certain customers for others. These people who frequently aren’t even fans of the product itself but instead are fans of the promise of money that their products come with ruin the launch of many products. I’m talking about scalpers of course. Three years ago I made a video called scalpers are ruining everything where I lamented the fact that the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 were being bought up and immediately relisted for sale on third party sites at a steep increase. But we live in a very different world now, economic factors have overlapped with a feeling that the upgraded PlayStation 5 Pro offers very little in the way of meaningful benefits. Which has finally caused scalpers to get their just deserts.

Video Games Chronicle has an article by Chris Scullion where Chris talks about the trouble scalpers are having moving the PS5 Pro due to low demand. The biggest difference between the launch of the PS5 and the Pro is that if you want a Pro you can very easily just buy one at any online retailer. This is in sharp contrast to the state of things with the PS5 launched where you would have to queue up online at certain times and hope that you were able to get lucky enough to beat the bots to the punch. This availability at market price is leaving the scalpers who purchased the console under the assumption that there would be a similar shortage in the lurch. From the article
“A number of sellers currently have Buy It Now consoles on sale for £680-£700, while others have auctions currently sitting between £510 and £670 – while these auctions will likely rise before they end, it seems less likely that they will surpass the console’s £700 retail price.”
There are many reasons for the PS5 Pro not performing as well as the initial PS5. For instance many people around the world are feeling the pressure of inflation and the $699.99 price tag is generally off putting. The fact that the showcase for the console left many players wondering what exactly they would be paying such a high price for couldn’t have helped. Then you have to take into account that many players have only just upgraded to the next gen consoles in the last couple of years, when supply chain issues caused by Covid finally let up and the consoles were made more readily available. Finally, while it is a meme that this current generation has been severely lacking when it comes to new titles, that doesn’t make the statement any less true. Why would a player spend $700 to upgrade when there isn’t a premium title that would benefit from the new console?
To conclude I don’t think anyone is going to weep for these poor resellers. On the contrary I’ve already seen other videos and articles poking fun at their predicament. Life is tough and the console war rages ever on but for one moment all gamers can come together and say get fucked scalpers! Thanks for reading.
